The BKR Africa sub-regional meeting took place in Mauritius on Monday and Tuesday, 20-21 March 2017. It was hosted by BKR Mauritius member firm International Proximity. As well as a good number staff from International Proximity, members came from Auditec-Foirier (Cameroon), Boake Incorporated (Johannesburg) and Logista Inc (Pretoria). This was the first time BKR have held an African meeting in Mauritius and the meeting was deemed a great success by all who attended.
The meeting was held in the Sugar Beach Resort Conference Centre, Flic En Flac, Mauritius. The event started on Saturday evening with a dinner hosted by International Proximity in Domaine Anna. There were a number of staff from International Proximity present. This gave the delegates a chance to meet the host firm in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere. On the Sunday there was the opportunity for the delegates to mix with a trip to sites on the west coast of the island. This including a visit to the sacred lake of Ganga Talao, views of the Chamarel Waterfall in the Black River Gorges National Park and a stop on the coast at the foot of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its poignant reminders of the horrors of slavery.
On Monday the business stated and after introductions by Ashish Jagarnath from host firm, International Proximity, his colleague Suzanne Gujadhur Bell gave a presentation on ‘The Mauritius International Financial Centre’, then Tim Morris, the Europe, Middle East and Africa Executive Director of BKR International gave an update on BKR International and the various ongoing initiatives, especially those in the EMEA Region. This led to some extremely interesting discussions on the effects of BREXIT and the future of US Tax.
These discussions were followed by a series of presentations over the two days, which included updates from member firms. Presentations were also given by Sunil Benimadhu, Chief Executive of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, on ‘Listings in Mauritius’, Subba R Dukkipati, Managing Partner from the Pragnya Group on ‘Mauritius as a Platform for Real Estate Investment in India and Africa’, Jeremy Nathan, CEO of Cinebar Films on ‘Mauritius as an International Film Destination’ and Vivek Mathur, CEO of Cloud Factory on ‘Cloud Opportunities in Mauritius’.
